Garden Arbors

Helpful information about the wood we use for our Arbors.

We selected Port Orford Cedar because it is beautiful, incredibly strong, a durable wood and a dependable choice for exterior use. With an intriguing natural light color, it accepts stains well and fits into any decor. Its fine texture remains smooth with no raised grain or slivering and a pleasant sweet-spicy scent.

Rated strongest among all cedars, matching the strength of even Douglas Fir, Port Orford Cedar has earned a reputation for its strength and decay-resistance. This decay resistance is due to naturally occurring oils in the wood. Port Orford Cedar has historically been the preferred wood for building boats and Japanese temples (it's heartwood has an in-ground life of 20-25 years). Port Orford Cedar has been used to build the stadium seats at the world-famous Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, park benches at Yosemite National Park and for building America's Cup yachts. This unique wood is used extensively in many of our products.
